John Immel

He's a generally ornery pot string iconoclast that loves to make people think. He's harmless (well, mostly harmless). And don't forget lovable in an affectionately blunt sort of way. Whatever your first feelings, read and listen long enough and you will come to agree with him.

  • Well I finished Blight in the Vineyard yesterday John. I was wholeheartedly impressed and encouraged, and that is a pretty big understatement. It is epic and a terrific effort and the last 4 or 5 chapters really blew me away, You definitely give some good tools to climb out of the hole. Definitely not one of those books that you just “finish” and then put in a box lol. Definitely something I will be returning to for ideas…I especially like how you articulate your ideas, which will really help me in trying to engage other people in conversation about this stuff. It’s one thing to say Reformed theology is bad, or I don’t agree with Church ™ or whatnot, but to coherently and logically (and with humor) lay out substantial ideas is hard… Jesus bless

  • Jacob,

    Epic.  Gotta love that.

I could not be more pleased with your feedback. My goal was to provide exactly what you took from it.

I do appricate everything you said. Thank you for investing. Thank you for engaging. Thank you for thinking for yourself.

    John

  • John, thanks for putting me in the acknowledgements. First for me!!! Looking forward to having a Sam Adams with you. Finally got a day to read the “Blight” and I loved it!! Going to sleep now but will have more to say later.

  • Thanks John Galt ….

Some time when i’m headed out to scuba dive i’ll drop you a line.

And did you actually read the whole thing in one day? Wow. I’ll only let you charge me half a beer next time.

    >snicker<

  • I did read it in one day. Sat on my back porch with my favorite cigars and beverage and read it straight through. It has a big impact. i will be going back to do a more studious reading, but the book was really well written. BTW, i loved the yellow submarine reference!!!

  • John, just finished BiV.  Started to cry when I saw where you were going at the very end, encouraging us to look to Jesus, know Him and His great love more personally and share His love with others.  And the call back to the basics, reading the Bible objectively for ourselves, asking, “Who is talking? Who are they talking to? What is the occasion/context?” and to simply believe the letters in red at face value, is exactly what we need to hear.  Besides the “each of them will sit under his vine and under his fig tree, with no one to make them afraid”, I was also reminded of Micah, 6:8, “He has told you, o man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

I also loved your admonition to not ask or answer the “where do you go to church” question, how telling.  For believers, He is our dwelling place and dwelling in us.  He is the “pure doctrine”, and safety.

  • Also appreciated that you encouraged readers to seek the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as a subsequent gift to His indwelling upon regeneration.  I received it a few years after coming to faith, and it made a profound difference in understanding the Bible.  Maybe it had something to do with reading in increased faith, with a fuller understanding of being loved and accepted by God.

  • 2+2

Thank you. I am glad you liked the book.  It is always a thrill to hear how it impacts.

And yes, the baptism in the spirit…  I get mixed reviews on that particular score.  Oh well, I can’t imagine living without it. So I advocate.
